So tread width and section width are 2 diff things, and you need to take both into account.

The tall the tire is, the wider the section width gets. The more narrow a wheel is, it can also make a tire wider. (in general)

You can look at specs of a tire and find diameter, sec & tread width, etc.

215s are way too small in tread width, that's like skinny/fat days, and not safe. 225s are too small but can work on some cars, lighter ones I would think. You can get away with a 235, but honestly, you really don't want to run anything less than a 245. 255 front/275 rear is the 'standard' performance setup.

A typical 245/45/17 tire has a tread width of 8.2", and a section width of 9.6" (dia @ 25.7"). If that fits for someone else, you basically can get a similar tire in an 18" with similar tread & section width.
