@jhein & @keith k...exactly what I was trying to convey, albeit poorly. If a restoration shop can't recoup the cost of parts/labor, it would take an individual similarly skilled who loves the car enough to do the same work, keep it and eat the $. Or get it roadworthy and not be worried about a full resto.

$55K in the existing condition seems steep to me, regardless of the rarity.
