Running downstream receptacles on a GFCI outlet, specially in the kitchen where large loads are commonly used, can stress them pretty good.
Depending on the age of the GFCI outlet ... some of the older ones were basically work-arounds to get a circuit to meet code and were not of the highest quality.
Kitchen circuits should be on a GFCI (or better) breaker in the load center. Easy to do, if you are comfortable working in the load center. Basically just swapping out the Kitchen circuit breaker and typically attaching a pigtail to the neutral bus.
