Sounds like someone messed up on the order?
Places like American Powertrain, Modern Driveline, and Silversport all will get the shifter in the correct location when ordered as such, they all just go about it in a different way.
I personally prefer American Powertrain and I like using their White Lightening shifter. The TK's have the option of putting the shifter in 2 locations fore and aft and the shifter itself has multiple positions it can be setup with making the whole deal extremely versatile. Then pick your stick, and I've never had a car I couldn't get the shifter in the stock location perfectly centered in the console. I've done A-bodies, F-bodies, vettes, Mustangs, never had to chop a thing, it's honestly very straight forward.
