That is probably right. There is a 1961 Craftsman note to cut about 1 inch (IIRC) out of the radiator end of the hose that was a big sweeping curve. That moved the hose away from the air cleaner and was to prevent the end of the big air cleaner snorkel from cutting the hose. That little straight section would probably take care of that.
