I had a variation of your scenario. In the early 1980s, I bought a 1970 WS engine out of a Trans Am from a garage. The owner of a 1970 Trans Am brought his car into the shop with a rod knock. The shop pulled his engine, but the TA owner decided to replace it with a 454 rather than rebuild the WS. About five or six years later, I met another person at Charlotte Autofair who was looking for a WS. He tells he has a 1970 Trans Am 4-spd with a 454 he bought out of the Charlotte NC area. His car sounds an awful lot like the car I bought the motor out of. I checked the VIN on the block and I confirm it is out of his car. I put a price on it, he thought it was way too high. He also thought he had a legal claim to the engine because he held the title to the car. He went as far as having a lawyer send me letters threatening to sue me. I told him I wasn't selling him the motor cheap, and I wouldn't sell it to him at all. I told him not to call me any more, but I'm pretty sure he had one of his buddies call looking for a WS motor after that. I was tired of dealing with him and decided I wasn't selling the motor to anybody. I don't know what he did for an engine, I probably held onto the motor for another 15 - 20 years before I sold it to someone halfway across the country.
