Milage differences really only come into play at steady highway speeds as this chart shows, it also shows the other side of the coin.
That other side is the fact that around town driving dealing with stop lights and such that a 3.40 something rear gear will give the fuel mileage of a 2.41 rear gear, but with far better acceleration, as in fun.
