Some more tweaking after a 600 mile round-trip shakedown going to the Trans Am races in Austin. Cliff R provided a tip on the distributor not coming down off the mechanical advance and indeed, when hot, the weights seem to be hanging up and I'm seeing 22 degrees at 1000 rpm when it should be at my initial 14, so I've got that to contend with. I did discover I can close the idle mixture screws all the way and the engine still idles, so the APT must have been "adjusted" and the true possible cause of the remaining issues. What's the best way of getting the epoxy off to access the scree again?
I was very pleased with the 18mpg on the first 250 miles and 19mpg on the last 250 miles running on I35 at 72-75 mph with absolutely no pinging, so I think my rod and jet combo is what it needs to be.
