Nothing too strange about a correctly coded replacement engine .
Since the 80's restorers have been relocating proper replacement engines for upper crust cars.
Someone probably didn't realize that WD and WM meant anything different.
Yours should be WD , but I wouldn't lose sleep at this point.
Unless the actual true original WD block popped up with your VIN.
C087857 is your EUN engine unit number , termed by Pontiac.
They used that leading C character from 71 through mid'ish 73 - we don't know why.
That number goes up with every V8 production engine made/assembled at PMD.
So we are also able to use it as a reference to time and dates.
PMD in Michigan did all the casting machining assembling of all their engines.
Then they were shipped to the various plants that built the cars.
For them the EUN was a dual purpose identifier for quality control tracking and identifying.
When potential recalls or service issues became known - the bulletins would say to the effect -
Regarding engines 054321 through 234567.
Not very many people in the hobby have any idea what the EUN is or it's relevance.
