As an example, the LeMans I had was like 4200lbs, 461 stroker e-head solid roller, OD trans and 3.73 gears. I daily drove that and did many long trips in it. Best mpg numbers were in the 21-23mpg range.
I had a 67 Dodge Coronet convertible with a 318, was like a 275hp build, 3.23 gears, and it would get best in the 30-32mpg range.
Friend had a 74 Ventura, 350 with a 4bbl swap, 3.23 gears, and he would get best in the mid-30s mpg.
It can be done with older cars, contrary to popular belief.
