About 10 years ago I installed two 9" (I think) puller fans directly on the radiator in my '68 bird and wired them so they turn on with the compressor. The car would got hot with the A/C on in the summer at stop lights and in slow traffic, so I tried the electric fans as an experiment. It worked well, so I just kept everything in place. I have to replace the water pump gasket soon, and when I do, I plan on making some changes in the cooling system so that I can jettison the helper fans. Even though they work, it feels like a band aid solution.
