You can disconnect the shift cable at the transmission and check to see if it will shift out of park. When I worked at a Pontiac garage we sold lots of shifter cables. People would change engines etc and neglect to reinstall the ground cables. Chassis would ground through the shift cable and melt the inner plastic. Cable would freeze up and trans could not be shifted. Just a possiblility.
