Steering Shaft Upper Misalignment.
I posted this in the '64/'65 GTO/Tempest section, but the problem could be in any '60's Pontiac.or other GM.
The steering shaft that runs from the steering wheel to the steering gear is not concentric with the steering colum at the steering wheel end. I have to push the shaft down approximately 3/8" to align it with the turn signal switch bearing. This requires considerable force.
My concern is the upper and firewall bearings being stressed due to the misalignment. I don't know if there is an adjustment to correct this issue. If the steering gear could be aligned to match the position of the upper shaft angle, all would be OK, but this is not an option that I"m aware of.
As of now, the steering is assembled and everything works just fine. should I be concerned or do any of you have suggestions on how to align.
