It can be done in the car. Back in the 1980’s me and a buddy welded-in a 4-core lower section into my 66 GTO. Cut it from a junkyard core support. Not that difficult really, just drill/grind out some spot welds, weld new in place. Don’t forget to disconnect the battery before welding.
