I helped a guy years ago, with a Len Williams block. Len built the short block, Dave Bisschop did the heads, I designed the cam and then installed cam/heads/etc onto the shortblock.
It burned a quart of oil about every 100 miles, for the first thousand miles. Then it sealed up. 12 years later, he is still driving and enjoying it.
