A wide thrust clearance can also cause a bad RMS leak. The crank “walking” back and forth ruins any seal. A new seal wouldn’t last anytime. Some engines were knocking with all that clearance. Replaced crankshafts under warranty in the late seventies at the Chevy dealer. Nothing was machined consistent back in those days.
