Your comment made me grab the cap of my 71 and try it. Sure enough, it fits. The tank in my 71 is original, but the cap isn't. My 71 is a Van Nuys car with factory emissions junk (that's long gone).

Here's some pics of the cap situation. The far left is the original 1970, the middle is the one Ames supplied with the tank, and the right is off my 71.
