I live in Houston, so I have some of the same concerns. At the builders suggestion we put roll up doors on the sides of the shop. On hot days this really creates a lot of air flow, adds a lot of versatility (drive in locations ) and did not cost that much more than windows.
LED lighting is cheap- ended up getting mine from Lowe’s off the shelf.
My HOA made me match the original height of my garage and I’m glad they did. It has a much more ‘open’ feel to it and allows the light to do its job.
I do wish I had replaced the single garage doors with double- makes it hard to maneuver the bigger cars.
