John Clegg's Harwood scoop was mounted so the rear opening appeared to be a bit closer to the rear of the hood than the conventional location of the factory shaker scoop opening. Thus closer to the windshield.
He tapped some cloth onto the top of the back of the scoop and made some passes, and observed that the cloth bent into the scoop opening at speed, confirming his theory that the air traveled into it.
Side note- He sealed the carburetor to the scoop, but used the Pontiac's front grille as an air source, and the air from there leads directly into the carb pan. That way the carburetor is isolated from the contaminated air around the motor.
