The following image has two distinct stamped codes;
One is what might be called the transmission ID code, the other is the partial vin to verify it as being original equipment (for warranty purposes).
P2D14A = tranmission ID code
P = Muncie-4spd (source plant)
2 = model year (1972)
D = month of assembly completion (April)
14 = date of assembly completion
A = gear set (wide ratio "M20"; IIRC B/M21 & C/M22)
12S828288 = partial vin code
1 = Division code (Chevrolet)
2 = model year (1972)
S = assembly plant code (previously mentioned as Corvette; N/Norwood; Z/Fremont; ect)
(last 6 digits) = final six digits of vehicle vin number
