Just had an expensive adjustable Cloyes timing gear set that the markings were wrong. By the marks, it had to be installed 8 degrees retarded to advance the cam 4 degrees.
Not to mention the instructions had bad information on how many degrees each link on the chain represented. Needless to say it took way too long to get it all figured out and the cam installed correctly. If someone were to install it without checking it they would have an engine that was a complete dog below 4000 rpm.
