Here's a pic of my Type II pump, 600 series box (which is smaller than the 700/800 series), Billet Specialties serp setup, and external reservoir.

Look how close everything is.

The only other way to do it is to mount the reservoir on the inner fender well or somewhere. It's tight there. And almost no way you can use rubber, pre-formed hoses, just not enough room.

I guess if I worked on it more I might be able to do something better, and still need to put the Lee reservoir on there, but there still isn't much room.
