If you’re going to use a carb plate and not just span a chain from the passenger rear head to the front drivers head then the hood will need to come off if I recall right.
Yes the carb will need to be removed to span the motor.
If the 1/8” coolant drain pipe plugs do not come out on each side of the motor above the oil pan rails then remove the lower hose at the radiator end and jack up the ass end of the car off the ground.
This will drain the block enough that pulling the heads off or the timing cover while on an engine stand will not leave you with a antifreeze mess in the cylinders or on your floor.
