I recently had two significantly swollen lithium batteries, from a laptop and a picture frame. I called my fire department to ask how to dispose of them. They said I should get an appointment at the county hazardous waste collection and in the mean time, put them in a Ziplock bag to stay dry and put them in the middle of my yard away from the house and anything flammable until the appointment. Then I started thinking about how many of those batteries are in the house....

It's like a pile of oily rags they may or may not ever start burning.
