My setup works and is like yours. The rotor phasing is equally important for the full locked run mode and I adjust according to the run total timing. Locked MSD distributors will likely have a rotor phasing issue regardless of a starter saver. Likely you have an EMF induction form the secondary wires to the feed wire from the distributor - the dizzy wires must be well separated from the coil or plug wires.
I think you are almost home with this working.
