I wish to piggy-back on that one;
The "stereo" AM/FM radios were the "red dot" radios - when the station came in strong, a tiny red light would illuminate on the dial face.
The non-stereo AM/FM (& AM) radios came in two flavors because of the availability of the tape (now referred to as 8-track) player;
The ones with the rear fader were (afaik) not teamed up with the tape player, while the ones without the fader were teamed up with the tape player.
The tape player had a built in fader which negated the need for a fader on the radio.
