My 69 Sprint Firebird was a factory 3-speed 3.55. Previous owner, my dad, swapped in a 3.08 Camaro rear, then put in a Muncie 4-speed which was a 2.54 first gear. Was kind of OK to drive on flat land, but a bit weird doing uphill starts. The 3.08 blew (had a rough life in its previous car) so due to tight budget of being a teenager I grabbed the quickest cheapest used rear from a Nova. Turned out to be a 2.73. Was like starting off in second gear even on flat land.
So yeah, choose ratios carefully.
PS I'd still like to find a correct ZH 3.55 Nodular case rear end, date code Oct-Nov 68...
