You may want to lay your A-Pillar reveal molding in there - there is a taper/pinch at the bottom of the molding that should align with the bottom of the A-Pillar.
For whatever reason, the gap from the pillar to the door does seem to vary on these cars. The shop that painted my TA happened to be doing a 70 Formula at the same time, and I recall on that car he did weld on some metal at the bottom of the A-Pillar to close the gap up a bit.
