You can change springs without removing the ball joints from the spindle. You remove the shocks and the lower A frame pivot bolts to get the spring out. We used this tool quite frequently when I worked in a Buick dealership in the mid 80s. You can change out both springs in under an hour on a lift using this tool attached to a transmission jack. Once you have used this method the spindle ball joint method is really slow comparatively.

IMO it's also safer to remove springs using this method.
