You could learn about mechanical fuel pumps by taking it apart.
The web pictures say that is possible. The things to look at would be:
The pump diaphragm and the check valves. If they look good then try
it on the engine. Not sure if they offer a rebuild kit but if the parts
visually look good it is worth a cleaning and a test on the engine.
