Re: carpet and trim - apparently not - in this arrangement you'd have to cut through the carpet as well.

We normally receive carpet with the cutouts already in place but in those instances where it is done on site we use a steel rule die. You throw the carpet over a floorpan shaped fixture and the sharpened edge of a steel blade is sticking up in the shape of the cutout. Hitting the edge of the steel with a rubber hammer (or leather hammer) cuts through the carpet in the shape of the opening.

I'll go back and re-review the Made in Pontiac photos to see what you are refering to relative to IPs -
