Arrow 1964 GTO 389 79J Engine & ST300 Transmission

1964 325 HP 389 code 79J with matching ST300 2-speed automatic transmission.

Complete with correct Carter AFB carburetor (not pictured), this engine is in need of a rebuild. The block is currently bored +.040” with cast pistons.

I did a quickie poor man’s rebuild on it 25 years ago, replacing the bearings along with the cam and lifters (068 blueprint cam), a new Edelbrock timing set and a Melling M54D 60 psi oil pump. I didn’t properly rebuild the heads only lapped the valves, I reused the pistons and rings from the previous rebuild. It runs fine but it smokes after it warms up. The ST300 works fine, there’s nothing wrong with it.

I removed this from my ‘64 Le Mans convertible to install a 421 HO and TH350 transmission. If I hadn’t come across the 421 I’d be rebuilding this GTO 389 and matching 2-speed. I do hope someone with a ‘64 GTO that’s in need of an original engine can use this.

Local pickup in Canyon Country CA 91387 preferred. I’m not really interested in shipping it, I can load it into your truck with my engine hoist.

$2500 OBO

Please send me a PM if you’re interested, thanks.
