In reality the pickup needs to be darn close to the same height off the bottom of the pan as the diameter of the pickup tube the pump uses.
These days since you can’t get any other Pontiac pump that does not have the good 3/4” size pickup tube, all I can say is a minimum of 1/2” off the bottom
of the pan is what I would be wanting.
