Hex is the same but where it penetrates the shank of the rim the lug nut will have a "bushing" type diameter that pilots into the rim. Two thicknesses were available. A thick shank is approximately .750" thick, thin approximately .375" thick. You can take a "thick" shank lug nut and cut it back in a lathe to fit a thin shank rim. A thin shank lug nut will work in both rims, you would just have less "pilot" of the lug nut in the shank of a thin rim. Obviously best to have correct match.
