The JD-212 is Kohler powered, had to rebuild it once about 20 years ago after it burned a slot out of the piston from a mouse building a nest right against the cooling fins. Using genuine Kohler parts it was nearly the cost of going thru a Chevy 350 V-8 engine!

The JD-318's are powered by Onan twin cylinder engines. Not even sure if you can buy rebuild parts for them these days. Most folks re-power them with Honda V-twins.

The problem with the larger JD offerings like the X series is that the better ones are Yanmar powered and it's difficult to find them on the used market, at least inexpensive ones. I lucked out on the X740 it came up for sale about a mile from the house when it's owner retired, downsized from 10 acres to less than 1/4 acre and the X740 was just too big for the yard and took up too much of his garage space.........
