i had all your same issues, except for too thick pads, i lengthened my push rod also, put a stainless flex hose on the back from frame to diff, with my 11 inch drums in the back, my brake pedal is still rock hard and super firm and i got a 1000 miles on it since finishing the car. i bleed mine from furthest away then work inwards from there, keep pluggin away.
