Pontiac definitely wasn't too worried about the sender ground and both photos are showing the correct location (although I would clean down to bare steel on the brace to insure that the wire is actually grounding). The big O-ring sealing the sender to the tank effectively isolates it and the ground wire is necessary for the sending unit to work.
