Stuart... a 9.3" 57-64 axle would be cool but if I use the original '40 axle it'll be all I need with the 287 motor. My buddy, Jim had a good running 56 with the 316/slant pan hydro and he tortured it every day..[we were in high school] and the worse thing that ever happened was the pinion nut loosened up. He loaned me the car for a trip and that pinion nut tightened up all by itself on the trip! Go figure.
I had a 56 with the original slant pan hydramatic and I built a hot rod 60, 389 for it and never had problems with the rear end. I'll change the gaskets and seals and check the wheel bearings...it's gonna be ok.
