The water jacket on an iron head is close to the area you would be threading and it would take a custom tap since the regular tap would bottom out inside the head before you had a good start on it.
Edelbrock furnishes steel pipe plugs to eliminate the heater fitting if desired, and also supplies a 1" threaded brass nipple for 5/8" hose. It is up to the end user to install a flow limiter in the nipple if desired.
