Dad & I were supposed to take the GTO on Hot Rod Power Tour this year. He was diagnosed with Cancer shortly after I purchased the registrations in January. We were still a go right up to about a week or so before we needed to leave. Dad has been getting weaker by the day, but he refused to let me cancel my plans because of him. So I did the next best thing... I took the GTO from my house in Rayne, LA to Memphis, TN, then to Nashville, TN, then to Hoover, AL, then to Pensacola, FL, then to Atlanta, GA, and finally back to St. Francisville, LA. I had Dad following the GTO & I the whole way on Glympse, and gave all of my friends his cell # so that if they got a good rolling shot it could be sent to him immediately. After we got our long hauler plaques, I had all of my friends autograph his plaque and brought it to him. He couldn't have been happier to see that old car pull up and park in his front yard so that he could see it from the front porch.
The car itself did exceptionally well on the trip. Ran a little hot when waiting in 1 or 2 hour lines to get into a couple of the venues, but that is expected when you're idling in 100 degree weather on asphalt with the car in front of you blowing their exhaust into your radiator. My buddies were talking about the mileage that they were getting with their BBC's, LS's, etc., when they asked me what I was getting I told them that it was pretty good, I was getting exactly, "I couldn't care less MPG!"
