I'd ditch the shifter and console and replace it with a stock console and one of the his/hers aftermarket shifters that fit in the stock console. The steering wheel has to go too. Get a repro wood wheel or a stock black wheel. As far as the engine goes, I'd leave it alone. If it runs, maybe put a Flowmaster exhaust to give it some sound. I would not go the route of ram air pans. You'd be into it for a lot and what is it really going to buy you in HP? It's a clone, so unless you're at a show you're just going to get thumbs up wherever you drive it. If you could get that car for $17K I'd say you did well assuming it's no full of bondo.
