I can help with this. Try to get you a few pictures tomorrow, if not by Friday.

Stock 6x9 mountng is behind the Rear seat upper. And yea the sound can be muffled, so a high efficiency Speaker is needed, even coaxial, trialial, or a darn good whizzer cone helps, but efficiency s key.

Those speakers pretty much have to play through the seat & top bag, correct? Speaker under the couch effect? I am just going to be running a re-coned 4x10 dash speaker though the mono oem Am/fm radio, but at one point had my eye on a stereo am/fm & had thought about adding that speaker location. Look forward to any pictures that get posted.

Here is a pic of a factory convertible speaker mount in a 69 GTO. As mentioned it's a standard 6x9 and it mounts to the right of the hydraulic pump facing the trunk. The bracing has the provision to locate the speaker and you cut the top well bag and then the speaker cover screws over top the speaker. When the top is up it works great but when it's down it might as well not exist. Unlike the Firebirds or previous generation A bodies there is no speaker "box" behind the speaker, it just sits between the two rear seat and trunk braces.

They never offered two speakers in the rear of A bodies from the factory but the prevision is there on the drivers side to add a second speaker if desired.

I put some good 6x9’s and a modern stereo in my 68 LeMans convertible. Sound is okay with the top up, it’s a joke with the top down. I am much better off using a good rechargeable Bluetooth speaker which I can take from car to car.

Here are the parts you’re looking for, original 6x9 oval rear speaker, blue wire, and grill cover for 68 GTO convertible. The speaker mounts behind passenger side of rear seat facing back towards top well. There are 4 special fasteners with screws to mount the speaker and grill cover. I’ll try to post a pic of the fasteners tomorrow.

I never knew the speaker was mounted through the bag. that sure makes sense though.
Did the rear speaker have a black cloth pulled over the cone like the the dash speaker did?

Cool Picture!

Yes, here’s a pic of front and rear speakers with thin black mesh cloth covering.

Here are some pics of one of the 4 hollow bolts, nuts and screws used to mount the convertible rear speaker and rectangular metal cover.

With the speaker grill cover removed, here’s a pic of the rear speaker mounted and the hole I cut in the well liner.

Take note that Ames sells those special bolts that come with the screw for the grille that screws in the head of the bolt but it doesn’t (at least the last time I ordered some) come with the nuts which is a problem because of an unusual thread count that is nearly impossible to find.

Btw, funny story, when I bought my Sprint (69 Fbird ragtop) I tracked down the original owner. He told me that the rear speakers (fbird with factory 8 tracks had a 4 speaker set up) were barely audible right from new. And not just with the top down but even when it was up.

When I repainted the car I decided to replace the still original factory installed top well as it was badly deteriorated. So I reached over the back seat and removed the two speaker covers. There was the reason the car had weak rear sound since 69. The assembly line guys didn’t bother to cut away the top well material so the speakers were covered completely under the grilles!
