Bearing or CV joint?
I have a 98 Grand Prix that has a vibration/noise in the front end when I am traveling straight or turning left, if I turn to the right the vibration/noise ceases. Can someone tell me if it is a wheel bearing or CV joint or maybe something all together different?
Thanks, Mark

Sounds like a wheel bearing, try jacking up each wheel and spin by hand. See if they make noise or spin freely or not.

I second that opinion, sounds like a hub to me, my 99 GP had a simalur issue last summer.

Thanks, that is what I suspected.
Since this is a front wheel drive car, how easy it to spin the wheel? I am sure I need to be in nuetral to do this. Is this a job I can do myself or would it be better to have a shop do this. I have replaced bearings on other cars before so I am sure I can do this as long as there are not any gotchas. I haven't taken a look yet to see.

Shuould spin fairly easy in nuetral. I have replaced a wheel hub and CV shaft in an 89 cavalier before, was not too tough. Only thing i can think of special that you may need is a 27mm? socket and torque wrench to re-torque the cv shaft nut.

If the noise goes away turning right, it will be the right hub that is bad.Greg

That was a question I was going to ask. Is that the right side while in the car or looking at it from the front?
Was going to check it this weekend.

For those interested it was the wheel bearing. I didn't have the proper size socket to remove the nut so I had a shop do it. Much better now.

Glad to hear we were correct, and glad it worked out for you.
