Question 70 ssj query...

i just picked up a 70 ssj. It is in pretty ruff shape. Someone had taken the body off the frame over 10 years ago, then quit the project. It has set outside with the parts piled inside the car since.
My question...the sunroof has been taken apart and i do not see the electric motor that operated it. The other stuff seems to be there tho. Would a electric motor from another application work on this? I believe i read that some caddy stuff may be the same?

It was an ASC roof used in the 70, used int mustangs and cougars as well as Caddy.

Try http://www.cougarpartscatalog.com/sunroofparts.html (Thanks to Harvey... I'm sure he will check in to htis thread shortly)

Wow a '70 SSJ, that's my dream car. Hopefully it's black.

I believe the 70's had the motor in front of the roof opening at the center (basically above the rear view mirror). The 71's & 72's had a completely different unit (Bosch, German, Mercedes) and the motor/gearbox is mounted above the left rear passenger area. The 70 will also have a little cap in that front area that you can pop out to insert a manual crank tool.

In mrrat's (Dave) picture you can see how Hurst did a hack job to get that roof assembly into the GP roofline. Mine looks like mrrat's and is loaded with sharp unfinished edges & bent brackets & plates that look like they were made on someone's workbench.

Your 70 used a Cadillac sunroof assembly, but I don't think they were actually made by GM back then. Webasto & ASC had a hand in those units. The name Golde also comes to mind, but I'm sketchy on those units.

I will tell you that the history & detail of those sunroofs is sketchy, but here's a cool website to learn more:http://www.coachbuilt.com/bui/a/asc/asc.htm

Did your 70 SSJ belong to a guy named Jeff in Georgia at one time? Or did it belong to a guy named Van? Have any pictures you can post?

I had a 77' GP with a factory option steel sunroof.
There was a plug for the manual crank lever in front of the sunroof and behind the switch, and the lever was included with the car.
Fortunately the sunroof never failed or leaked - we owned the car from 86' to early 92'.
Perhaps parts from 73-77 A & G body cars can work.

JC...hard to know for sure. I've only come across a small group of 70's and I've never had a chance to see one in the roof exposed.

I do see the hand crank gear there, so it's a strong possibility. Only the 70's had this version.

That should be a Bosch (german) unit, so see if you can cross-reference the part number I see on it. It should correspond to the 69-70 time frame.

And just for reference, the motors (and just about everything else) was different for the 71's and 72's, including the hole size in the roof, so it can be a bit confusing. I can't find any factory manuals that show exploded views, R&R, or parts lists.

ok!, seems I have found a supplier for the motor and associated hardware needed to get this part of project done. I will post pics as soon as the pieces are in hand.

Just an additional note on mrrat's picture: that red tube to the right side of the photo is the housing the drive cable traveled back and forth in . So when the roof was closed the cable was mostly out of the red tube and running dead center behind the roof panel. As the roof opened, the drive cable went through this tube and ended up wrapping around going forward just below the driver's side roof drip molding (inside the roof of course).
