I have the original engine in my 64 GTO. She has 86,000 mi. on her now and is starting to show her age. I would like to put the engine and tranny up and install a 455 and 5 or 6 speed tranny. Anybody have a source for this combo? Is this a good combo for the street?

Heirloom64..... Welcome to the forum! A 455 with any tranny is a great street engine... the sky is basically the limit on what you want to do with it. Go to the "Drivetrain-Street" forum and you will find a wealth of info on 455's and different trannys. There are a lot of great sources from stock to full race engines. Do a search and you will get mega-hits. Pontiac Dude builds a variety of engines, Butler Performance, etc...etc.. all depends on what you want. Good luck...... Jim

Welcome aboard.
As for 5 spd transmissions, it doesn't get any better than this http://www.keislerauto.com/gm/transm...elle_64-67.asp Feedback from those who have installed is outstanding.

Welcome to the board, Heirloom. Whatever you do, hang on to that original engine. If you ever decide to sell the car it will bring you significantly more $$ if you have the numbers matching block. Plus, at some point you may get the bug to go fully original again (it happens to us older guys).
One of my cars is a 64 Lemans that I pulled the original 326 out of in 1977 and replaced it with a 389 from a 64 goat. I've lugged that old 326 through three moves, one from North Carolina to Texas. It's still sitting in my garage!
