Default 3" tailpipe questions

Hey guys, how are you?

So I am going to redo my 3" exhaust from header to tailpipe.

After changing heads and headers, my old x didn't fit right, and is now a big hacked mess.

So I want to start clean and do a new system. I would like to run 3" tails, but I currently love the look of my stock splitters (they welded the stock tailpipes to the 3" mufflers and made them fit).

Anyhow, I know Torque tech has a 3" system with quarter exit tips.

I know Pypes has a 3" system with quarter exit tips.

Does anyhow use them and have pictures of them?

Anyway to make splitters work on either of those?

If I can't make the splitters work well, I want to know how the quarter exits look compared to the straight back to the bumper look.

Thanks for any insight guys!

Mike
I Have the PYPES 3 1/2 X system with the torque tech tails and when first setting them up in there at the muffler shop they looked terrible from the side being 3" just so big and hanging below the quarter, so I had them cut them like the 1st gens come out and love it!

The regular rear exit Torque Tech 3" I think could be cut for splitters. I've mocked them up and looked hard and think it could be done.Cutting them right where the turn is at the rear most hanger then rewelding the bend higher. Some SS 45degrees mandrel bends could be used for them.

Look at Pypes adapters for their 2 1/2 splitters to see how the angle should be

Pypes has a hanger/adapter that goes on the end of your tailpipe for your splitter. It works pretty good I used a set on my 76 with previous owner custom made tailpipes.

Darby that looks like a center out muffler, not offset, that still works for you huh?
I could go that way, I think if I can't get the splitters to work I would prefer that rather than the bumper exit.

As for the pypes stuff the offer custom pipes with adapters for the splitters, but only in 2.5". Wonder if I could reduce from 3 to 2.5 somewhere in the tailpipe like you guys suggest. Wish I had a welder and knew how to weld.

Thanks for the pic Darby, any more shots that people have would be great.

Thanks,
Mike

What about a 3" muffler in, 2.5" out with 2.5 tailpipes and mufflers. Do you think that would work or hurt performance much?

I'm running 3 inch into cone reducers into 2.5 mufflers into 2.5 tailpipes at almost 117mph with more mph to come this year.

i'm gonna use the Torque Tech 3.5" into their X then 3" back with their BW (behind wheel) exhaust pipes
i don't want the tail pipes all the way back, get to much dust and what not on the bumper cover, gets annoying after a while to clean it

i thought someone made a 3" splitter ( 3" in, dual 2.5's out), was it pypes????

i will use the Pypes 3.5" header collector
they make nice pieces
and probably use the typical flowmasters
wish they made them in Ti, think how much lighter they could be
Wish Borla made a muffler like my wife has on her C6 vette.... freaking AWESOME sound

I think the Pypes 3" splitter is 2.5 stretched to couple to a 3", nto a full 3".

Hey Skip, any pictures of your tails?

I ran the 3" torque tech tails to the bumper before, but this time I plan to do quarter exit, with or without splitters. But I would like to see pics of pypes and torque tech quarter exit tails.

I think I have a picture on another computer. I have Ultraflows and a Dr. Gas X -pretty quiet. Runs as fast as open headers even with the weight of the system on there.

i may have
but personally i am addicted to that drone sound
but i'm also not at the cruising rpm range on highway to hear it

right now i have the american thunder mufflers which i think are the original 40's??

probably going towards the super 44's

TT doesn't make the exhaust in Ti, nor does flowmaster make a muffler in Ti
probably to expensive and who knows if it would really save weight

Pypes makes a 3" tail with 2.5 out
maybe RARE does?
i could have sworn i saw something somewhere, but maybe it was the pypes outlet

I'm just probably doing 3.5" to the X, 3" after, with the quarter exit
i'll just try to polish up the pipes a little before i take em down to get welded in
i wish pypes made the 3.5" collector to 3.5"
that have a really NICE collector
i didn't like what the Dougs headers kit had or the TT kit had

My Son and I did a 3" exhaust system this past season on a 78 Trans am. It's 3" dual from the headers to the splitters.. Looks beautiful..

There's an outfit in B.C. Canada that does Mandrell bending. Here's a link.. Very nice product.. He does kits.. http://www.muffler-tech.com/

Not cheap thin wall pipe either..

The 3" splitters, you can get from Suppliers.. Pypes has them part #EVT13..

My son and I had to fab up the last portion of the tail pipes to install the 3" stainless tips..
We just bought some 3" U- Bends..
