Default 69 glove box door

So I have these two 1969 glove box doors. The gold one is from my Grandmas car which was a late build. The black door is from an early build 69.
The gold (late build) does not have the metal reinforcement at the hinge and the black (early build) does have the metal reinforcement. Is this in fact an early late deal or something else.

Hmm, never noticed this. I'll look at mine (4 cars) and report back.

I checked the following cars and none have metal;

Feb Fremont
Feb Arlington
Dec Baltimore

Btw, what exactly does that metal do? Does it replace the plastic hinge? How does it connect to the rest of the glove box?

I have a July built car but I can't get to it now, I'll see it next week

Just checked another door I have from an early car and it has the metal reinforcement. All my cars are from Freemont.

Fwiw. Mine was an Arlington build and as mentioned earlier it was a March build. I have only owned the car 7 years so while it appeared to be original to the car I cannot vouch for that as fact. Each time I pull it out to mess with the stereo or air I have wondered how they did not use metal. Now it appears I have an option if I so desire.

So it's a metal hinge? I found another one from an early Baltimore car, plastic only.

My july car is from Fremont, I'm curious to see it

Is the metal a replacement for the plastic hinge or just a support?

Maybe they are an upgrade after the fact that was only over the counter.

Funny thing is I always thought that it was a joke the pontiac made a hinge out of pressed plastic like a ketchup bottle!

But I have to admit, I've never seen a broken hinge in 46 years!

Maybe it was a tolerance issue with only off spec ones failing early.

Mine is January--Baltimore--plastic

I have seen a couple of other 69 doors on cars--all plastic. I suspect they were either Baltimore or more probably Atlanta factories.

I have never seen the metal hinge, but it seems like a smart idea.

No the metal is not the hinge, it's just a backer of sorts.

My car is a Oct 68 Baltimore build and no metal and, my plastic hinge is finally starting to go. Like North said, cheap stuff per GM. I would very much like to get a metal one now that I have seen it. Never knew it existed.

It has to better/stronger than the plastic, no?

Mark, the hinge on the ones with the metal is still plastic, the metal just stiffens up
that part of the hinge....it doesn't prevent the plastic hinge from breaking. Although I've
never tried it, I've heard that it is possible to rivet a metal piano hinge to the broken hinge
and repair it.
