I have a 70 lemans 350, after removing the water pump and attempting to reinstall the new one I am having a problem getting the long bolts that go through the water pump housing to thread. Facing the engine the bolt on the right seems to be misaligned with the housing and the block. The bolt is not stripped it thread through on the left but it seem to hit solid metal when attempting to do the right side. I have run a punch through the hole it hits solid metal. Anyone have a problem like this before. The bolt was difficult to remove, I am thinking the engine might have shifted after removing the bolt causing the housing to misalign. Any ideas or suggestion would be helpful.

Thanks
Tom

are you sure the end of the bolt didn't break off in the block?

i've seen this happen before where the corrosion is tight enough in the cover that you don't realise the bolt is broken unitl you try to reassemble it.

Thanks for the reply Mike, whats odd is the bolt on the left side (as you facing the engine) has been broken off inside the block but that bolt has abount 7 rings of threads and tightens up nicely. I took the bolt that is not threading and that went in fine on the left side. The bolt that is the full length is not broken, when I put in a punch its hit solid metal. Its like the housing shifted when the tension of the bolt was released.

normally the housing won't shift unless there's another problem, loose cover bolts, ect.

can you see what's at the bottom of the hole?

Which holes are you asking about? The 2 studs below the water pump are tight and when I went underneath I believe there are 2 more bolts. I didn't losen them becaause I wanted to see if anyone else had a similar problem before I go any further.
