Default '67-'69 Vinyl Roof Guys Only!

Hi Guys,
Are any of you familiar with the "Vinyl Top Retainer Strip"? Apparently it is made of some type of plastic strip and presses down into the full length of the drip rail to help hold the sides of the vinyl top in place. I don't remember EVER seeing this but, after doing a little research, they were actually there. They show them used on '67-'69 Firebird, Camaro, Chevelle, etc. I did not remove one from my '68 before removing the old vinyl and having the car painted. Maybe it had disintegrated over the years? I am re-installing my vinyl and think this part would really help assure a good, lasting job and tight fit, just surprised that after all these years I never heard mention of this piece on a Firebird before. Your thoughts?
Thanks,
Greg

Nothing like that on my 400 coupe when I pulled what was left of the 40 year old top. New one went on beautifully. But good luck getting those chrome retainer strips back on.

That other link looks like it prevents water from collecting in the trough.

If I may...

Do you guys suggest painting or just primer under new roof?

They are real. I remember 15 years ago a couple of friends finding out that they needed this piece and, after much searching, finding some NOS.
Hard to find now. I don't think they are needed anyway.

Only time they are needed are for Concours Judging. With the adhesives to glue down the vinyl top that are available now, they are not really needed. I've replaced dozens of vinyl tops on early GM A bodies over the years and never had a problem.

Mine did not have the strips you are talking about. I did not use anything to reinstall the top either. How did the stainless work with this plastic in the channel?

It was just a flat piece that laid flat it the drip channel. Did not touch the aluminum cover on the outside.
