Default Cup Holders

In the latest issue of Hemmings Muscle Machines there is a 66 with a factory style console that has had 2 holes cut in the console lid and it looks like an aluminum ring mated to the holes to make for a good presentation. At least thats what it looks like from the not so great interior pic. Those of you that have cup holders in your car what are you doing? I dont have a console right now but I have been studying on getting one because all my other A bodies had them and I want a vacuum gauge. What do you guys think about that idea?

I personally wouldn't cut up a rare factory console to accommodate cup holders. If you want a console with cup holders, custom build one yourself or explore options like this:

Other options available:

I have a factory console, so I purchased an aftermarket cupholder that slides between the seat and the console. Not exactly like this one, but similar in concept:

Get a spare council at a swap and do what you like.
I got a broken council box, cut the hinge off, put one of weasels cup holders in it, it’s open, no lid, I don’t do shows, just cars and coffees, need a place to set it.

A complete repro console will run you around $850. A used 59 year-old original with pitted and peeling chrome will run you around $650. Either way, you have to hole saw the metal top plate to insert your cup holders (lots of flanged stainless steel ones available as they are popular with boaters).

There are a few aftermarket consoles that don't look like they came out of an RV, a;ll poofy and overstuffed. This cheap one off eBay actually looks pretty good though. Pretty low key and armrest contours that look similar to an OEM console.

NeighborsComplaint I like that one. Just curious. If I bought a repro console and tried it and hated it could I buy just the lid to fix it back?

Yes, Parts Place (Ames) sells them for $65 delivered on eBay.

There are lots of universal cup holders on eBay also, from simple black with chrome flange that drop in place to doubles that have a figure 8 style trim ring. On the doubles, you have to hole saw your 2 holes and then connect them with 2 cuts across the center between the holes. A bit more challenging, but a classier install overall.

https://www.cupholdersplus.com/1964-...e-console.html This one just sits over the console. No drilling or cutting.

cupholdersplus.com is the link I provided earlier. Many other options as I mentioned in my post.

I got a cheap one on Ebay that slides in between the passenger seat and the console. Holds two cups, and my phone.

There's no way I'm cutting up a console for cup holders. Before the ones I have now, I would just put the cups in the console with some old microfiber cloths to keep the drinks upright. Worked fine unless you're power shifting every gear all the time lol

Neither would the OP since he stated he has a repro console.

Personally, I think all the add-on cup holder gizmos look like they belong either in an RV or some soccer mom's car. I like the idea of a clean, built-in looking installation unless you're protecting an OEM console. Then I would buy a repro lid and rework it.

I had considered installing a couple in mine but the lower section of my console is too shallow and wouldn't accomodate the depth of a cup holder. Cutting up an aftermarket lid/armrest (using the depth of the glovebox) wouldn't bother me except that on my '71, a tall cup would be right at elbow height when steering.

Actually, he clearly stated he doesn't have a console:

That's why I showed the one that I did from cupholdersplus.com - as it doesn't require a factory console.

I just use a plastic bottle with a screw on cap and lay it in the seat.

I want a factory console for the vacuum gauge. I just saw the idea in Hemmings muscle machines and thought if I could try it and it didn’t work I could replace the lid. I have the plastic ones that hang off the door now .
